Participó junto a Alfredo Benavidez Bedoya y

Wandering loose, paintings and drawings by Claudio Pedraza
+COLLECTIVE28
5 July – 16 August 2014
A structure of symbols is distributed across the
landscape. Claudio Pedraza’s scenes take place in the open air, yet the sky is always
cloudless: it gives the impression that clouds are unnecessary. The figures
float, defying the order of gravity. Indeed, many of the works can be viewed
upright or upside down, vertically or horizontally, whilst still maintaining
their composition and internal order.
The symbols can be enumerated in hypnotic order: the
triangle and the eye, the crab claws, the forearm bones, the boxer, the
elephant, the knife, the hammer, the aeroplane, the tree and on occasions the
cactus, the coffin, the building, the animal, the giants and the old TV
antennae.
Although they may be symbols associated with violence,
in the work of Pedraza they enter in constant play: the planes don’t crash, the
buildings don’t collapse, the trees are perennial, the giants don’t squash
anyone or anything, the knives are raised without victims, neither the boxer
nor the hammer hit, the bones bend yet don’t break and a dozen eyes look at us
without threat. The variety that they offer seems to come from a world free of
wickedness, strange and somewhat magic.
For his exhibition in Galería Mar Dulce, Pedraza presents a selection of some twenty new works in mixed media on wood and ink on paper.
Claudio Pedraza was born in José Mármol, Buenos Aires province, in 1961. He graduated
from Manuel Belgrano School of Fine Art in 1985 and in the following years was
notable for his work in drawing and printmaking. Along with Daniel Santoro and
Alfredo Benavidez Bedoya he took part in the action of paying the external debt
with ‘art dollars’. Questions of
work, survival and the need to maintain his family led him to postpone his
artistic career for two decades. He returned to artistic activity in 2011. In
2013 he began to exhibit with Mar Dulce Gallery and in 2014 he was invited to
participate in an exhibition in Milo Lockett Gallery alongside Ricky Crespo,
Felipe Giménez and Milo Lockett himself.
Galería Mar Dulce specializes in small and medium
format artwork in painting, drawing, objects, limited edition print,
photography and artists’ books realized by classic and contemporary Argentine
and Uruguayan artists. To accompany Wandering
Loose, we present +COLLECTIVE28,
a specially curated selection of works by Juan Carlos Romero, María
Luque, Carlos Masoch, Alfredo Benavidez Bedoya, Johanna Wilhelm, Daniel
Santoro, Sofía Wiñazki, Jorge Carbajal, Ral Veroni, María Carmen Portela,
