Sofía y los animales es la primera exposición en Galería Mar Dulce de Sofía Álvarez Watson,
mejor conocida como La Watson. Presenta
unas 20 pinturas del libro del mismo nombre, publicado por Galería editorial.
Los editores escribe sobre el proyecto:
“Muchos dibujos animados,
desde los clásicos de Disney hasta Bojack Horseman, parecen tener
la obsesión de traer los animales a nuestra vida urbana, creando mundos donde
no nos sorprende que hablen, trabajen, sean alcohólicos, o no lleguen a fin de
mes. En un camino inverso, Sofía nos propone abandonar la ciudad, despojarse de
todo e ir a buscar a los animales a su lugar más crudo.
Sofía es una exploradora que
avanza sin cumplir ninguna premisa de manual ni de mundos literarios. No tiene
cortaplumas, ni cantimplora, ni siquiera está vestida. Recorre paraísos
naturales, se detiene, observa, toca, juega, duerme, avanza entre animales
salvajes, entre vegetaciones tupidas, como una niña curiosa que descubre el
mundo.
Sus pinturas nos llevan a un
espacio nuevo, desconocido. Parece, por los colores, por las formas, por los
gestos, que hay juego y diversión, que hay un equilibrio inalterable. En este
mundo que se retrata, se deja a un lado lo espiritual pero también lo material.
Se juega con lo puramente experimental, se trae a primer plano el goce y la
unión, la confianza de dormir sobre el lomo de un cocodrilo. Es un mundo donde
no existe la conquista ni el dominio supremo.
Sofía se aventura con su
libreta y sus acrílicos para dibujar lo que su corazón desee y tomar nota de
este mundo donde no hay tiempo para el trazo final. Donde hay que apurar el
paso o ser sutil para no molestar. Donde todo debe ser transportable y de
pequeño formato.
Sofía deja la ciudad atrás y
va en busca de nuevas experiencias. Es en ese gesto donde tal vez pueda
encontrar el consuelo o las respuestas a esas preguntas existenciales, que hoy
en día, como si no quedara otra alternativa, le seguimos preguntando a Google.
Sofía solo mira fijo a los animales, se recuesta sobre ellos, y descansa.”
Sofía Álvarez Watson (La Watson) es una artista plástica colombiana,
residente en Buenos Aires. Nació en la ciudad de Pasto, al sur de
Colombia, sobre las faldas de un volcán activo. Creció en Cali, ciudad de clima
caliente donde pasó su adolescencia. Se recibió de Bellas Artes en la
Universidad Nacional de Colombia en Bogotá, y su constante movimiento la llevó
finalmente a tierras argentinas en el 2012. Pinta animales, dibuja diosas del
fuego e historias de amor de desconocidos. Ha expuesto sus obras en
diferentes lugares de Latinoamérica, entre ellos, Brasil, Colombia, Perú y
Argentina. Ha publicado dos novelas gráficas y un libro de pinturas: Un Beso
Así (Ed. Musaraña, Argentina); Tres Veranos (Ed. Maten al Mensajero, Argentina
y Ed. La Silueta, Colombia); Sofía y Los Animales (Ed. Galería, Argentina) el
cual incluye varias piezas de esta exposición. Actualmente trabaja en su obra
pictórica, a la vez que en su próximo libro. Expone con Galería Mar Dulce desde
el 2014.
Galería Mar Dulce se especializa en obras de pequeño y mediano formato de pintura,
dibujo, grabado, libros de artista y objetos, realizadas por artistas locales
clásicos y contemporáneos. Junto a Sofía y los animales, presentamos +COLECTIVA59,
una curaduría de obras realizadas por Daniel García, María Allemand, Alejandro

Sofia and the animals is the first solo exhibition in Galería Mar Dulce by Sofía Álvarez Watson, better known as La Watson. It presents 22 paintings from the book of the same name, published by Galeria Editorial. The editors write about the project:
"Many cartoons, from the Disney classics to Bojack Horseman, seem to have an obsession with bringing animals into our urban life, and creating worlds in which we are not surprised when they talk, work, are alcoholic or can’t make ends meet. In contrast, Sofía Álvarez Watson proposes that we leave the city behind, get rid of everything and go to look for animals in their raw state; that we appear suddenly, observe them, embrace them and share the intimacy of silence with them.
Sofía is an explorer who ventures forth without fulfilling any of the basic premises of either the survival or literary worlds. She has no penknife, no water bottle; not even any clothes. She is unprotected and vulnerable … or maybe not. She travels to natural paradises, stops and observes. She touches, plays and sleeps. She advances amongst the wild animals and the dense vegetation, like a curious girl discovering the world.
Her paintings take us to a new, unknown space: a place of overwhelming harmony. It seems, from the colours, the forms and the gestures, that this is a space of play, fun and immutable balance.
In the world that she portrays, both the spiritual and the material are left aside. It is purely experimental play, bringing enjoyment and union to the fore. It is the confidence to sleep on the back of a crocodile; a world where there is no conquest or domination. There is no dispute between Sofía and the animals because there are no opposing positions.
Sofía steps out with her notebook and acrylics to draw what her heart desires, to capture a world where - like dreams painted at dawn - there is no time for a final stroke. Her step is hurried, or subtle so as not to disturb. Everything has to be transportable and small in format.
Sofía leaves the city behind and goes in search of new experiences. It is in this gesture that perhaps we can console ourselves, or find the answers to those existential questions that we keep asking Google, as if there were no other alternative. Sofía just stares at the animals, leans on them, and rests."
Sofía Álvarez Watson, AKA La Watson, is a Colombian artist. She was born in the city of Pasto, in the south of the country and on the slopes of an active volcano. She spent her childhood and adolescence in Cali, a city with a hot climate. She received a Fine Arts degree from the National University of Colombia in Bogotá, and her constant moving around eventually led her to Argentina, where she has lived since 2012. She paints animals and draws fire goddesses and strangers’ love stories. She has exhibited her works across Latin America, in Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Argentina. She has published two graphic novels and a book of paintings: Un Beso Así (Musaraña, Argentina); Tres Veranos (Maten al Mensajero, Argentina and La Silueta, Colombia); Sofía and The Animals (Galería, Argentina) which includes several pieces in this exhibition. She is currently working on her visual art and on her next book. She has exhibited with Galería Mar Dulce since 2014. Sofía and the animals will be her first individual exhibition in the gallery. She lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Galeria Mar Dulce specializes in small and medium format artwork in painting, drawing, print, artist's books and objects, made by classical and contemporary local artists.
