El Topo Ilustrado, created by artist Cristian Turdera and writer Tobías Schleider, is a project that crosses the plastic arts, literature, design and philosophy. Since 2013, they have posted over 750 vignettes on Twitter to almost 100,000 followers. They have published three books with Ediciones de la Flor, and the fourth - which lends both its title and artwork to this exhibition - is soon to be released.  Their 2018 calendars, published by Granica, will be presented at the exhibition opening. They have exhibited, held workshops and given talks in Argentina and abroad. Their work plays with different levels of meaning, making it attractive to young and old, observers and readers, intellectuals and intuitives alike.

CUARTO presents a selection of 18 works in varied series of 5 (numbered and signed) in acrylic on giclée, plus 3 paintings in acrylic.

"A canonical definition would dictate that the link created between El Topo Ilustrado and their social media followers is virtual, as opposed to real. The vast majority of the tens of thousands who follow the project may not even know that those behind the images and texts are people called Cristian and Tobias. Does that make the relationship with them less real? Of course not, it is a bond with a great deal of intimacy because we have all felt touched or provoked by their works. Who would say that is not real? Only a dictionary.

Another pair of opposites that seems very solid but that pales when faced with El Topo Ilustrado is that of analogue and digital. How can we describe the works in this show? They are intrinsically analogue as well as undoubtedly digital. Each of the pieces has its own small biography: they are born as paintings, digitalised, modified and printed before being directly intervened. It is a mutation that makes them impossible to label.

This exhibition reminds us not only that adictionary is useless for understanding what we see, but that we need more than words for the universe we contain within us. "(edited version of Tomás Balmaceda's catalogue text).

Galería Mar Dulce specializes in small and medium format artwork in painting, drawing, print, artists’ books and objects, realized by classic and contemporary Argentine artists.
