Fue un pintor a quien admiro mucho el que me presentó las obras de Mercedes Dutto. El artista había reconocido en ellas algo especial. Me habló de la abundancia de su producción artística, de su maestría técnica y de la coherencia del mundo de su creación.
Unas semanas después, recibo la visita de Mercedes en Mar Dulce. En la mesa ratona de la galería coloca una carpeta A4 de tapa negra. Me dice que esta contiene sus trabajos más recientes. Al dar vuelta las páginas entro en un mundo de seres en movimiento poético: figuras míticas medio-hombre ó medio-mujer, animales y plantas de especies desconocidas. Con sus sexos expuestos y agrestes exhalan humo y lloran lágrimas elongadas. Algunas figuras se presentan con orgullo en las posturas exageradas de dioses o guerreros. Otras juegan, recogen flores, ofrecen obsequios, flanean, se abrazan, pelean y hacen el amor. En algunas de las páginas parecen volar o quizás flotar, en otras se encuentran en la maleza de un raro jardín. Saco los dibujos de las fundas de plástico: línea sobre línea de lápices acuarelables sobre papeles de diversos tonos, desde negro mate hasta un rosa luminoso forman composiciones complejas y fondos viscerales. Se trata –sin duda– de una producción en la cual la artista se sumergió totalmente y que a su vez, por transferencia, me cautiva: llego al final de la carpeta, unas 130 imágenes y enseguida vuelvo al principio para volverlas a mirar.
De su extensa producción la artista comenta: "se construye de manera expansiva, como un hilo interminable con el cual voy tejiendo algo siempre inacabado. Puedo centrarme en una pequeña cosa como un gesto o una situación para arrancar con una idea, pero siempre emerge algún mundo interior que parece teñir las cosas, apropiándoselas, y creando su propia ficción de lo real."
Mercedes reconoce en la abundancia de plantas y flores de sus dibujos la influencia de cultivar y cuidar su propio jardín en las tierras áridas y duras de Comodoro Rivadavia. Sobre otros contenidos de su obra es más cautelosa y dice: "contienen en si una vida privada que es mejor que no salga a la luz, al mismo tiempo es lo que vemos, lo manifiesto y lo que podría ser. Hay situaciones que llevan a generar un relato pero es un elemento que suma. Son parte de la poética en donde ante todo tuve una búsqueda de color y formas."
Cualquiera sea lo que deseemos interpretar de este mundo misterioso y los seres que lo habitan lo que es fácil de reconocer en estas obras es el placer de la artista en su proceso de creación; en sus palabras: "no puedo evitar cierto enamoramiento con los materiales, las formas y los colores. Los junto y los separo, los entrelazo y los choco. Los hago odiarse para volver a enamorarlos ... o no."
Espero que ustedes se enamoren de estas imágenes, tal como hice yo cuando las ví por primero vez en ese carpeta A4 negra y sencilla.

I was introduced to Mercedes Dutto's work by a painter that I greatly admire. He had recognised something special. He spoke to me of the proliferance of her production, her technical mastery and the completeness of the world of her creation.
A few weeks later Mercedes visits me in Mar Dulce. She sets upon the coffee table an unassuming black A4 plastic folder, which she tells me contains her latest production. Turning the pages I enter a universe of beings in poetic motion, mythical figures half-woman or half-man, animals and plants of an unknown species. Their sex is exposed and raw. They breathe smoke and cry elongated tears. Solitary figures present themselves proudly in the exaggerated poses of gods or warriors. Others play, pick flowers, offer gifts, stroll together, embrace, fight and make love. On some pages the figures appear to fly or perhaps float, on others they are deep in the undergrowth of a garden. I take the drawings out of their plastic sleeves: line upon line of fine watercolour pencil on paper in tones from matte black to vibrant pink, creates intricate compositions and visceral background textures. This is a work that the artist has clearly been completely immersed in, and which in turn captivates me: I reach the end of the folder, some 130 images, and immediately return to the beginning to look once more.
Mercedes says of her extensive production: "the work expands, as if I were sewing with an everlasting thread something that never quite reaches its end. I can concentrate on a small detail -a gesture or a situation- to commence a work, but then an interior world always emerges which seems to taint things, to appropriate them and to create its own fiction from the real."
The garden of these drawings she acknowledges as influenced by her experience of cultivating and tending her own garden in the arid and challenging soils of Comodoro Rivadavia. Of the rest of the content she is more circumspect: "It contains a private life that is best left private. At the same time it is what we see, what is manifest and what could be. There are situations that tend to generate tales but they are no more than an element amongst others, part of a poetic in which first and foremost is the search for colour and form."
Whatever we may choose to read into this mysterious world and the beings that inhabit it, easily appreciated in these works is the artist's sheer pleasure in the process of their creation, in her own words: "I can't help but fall in love with the materials, the shapes and the colours. I bring them together and I separate them, I entwine them and I bring them crashing together. I make them hate each other so that they can fall in love again... or not."
I hope that you fall in love with these images, just as I did when I first viewed them in that unassuming, black A4 plastic folder.
