

Ana María Moncalvo (1921-2009) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She gradiated from the Ernesto de la Cárcova art school with Mitre gold medal prize. She continued her studies in Paris with Stanley W. Hayter. She realized numerous exhibitions in Argentina and abroad in New York, Washington, Madrid, Barcelona, Lugano, Bern, Zurich, Geneva, Tokyo, Krakow, Havana, Mexico and Rio de Janeiro. She received numerous distinctions, including the Gran Premio of the Argentine National Printmaking Salón (1951), the Gran Premio Internacional of the VI Mostra Internazionale di Bianco e Nero, Switzerland (1960) and the Prize for the best foreign printmaker in the Instituto Boliviano de Cultura Hispánica, Bolivia (1954). She was named ‘Académica de Número’ by the National Fine Art Academy and ‘Personalidad Ilustre de las Bellas Artes’. Her works can be found in various Argentine museums and abroad in the French National Library, the New York Museum of Modern Art, Mexico, Paraguay and in important private collections. Her mural can be seen in Piedras station of the Buenos Aires metro line ‘A’. Her illustrations can be seen in books including ‘Leyendas Guaraníes’ by Ernesto Morales and the bibliophile editions of ‘El otro’ and ‘Milongas’ by Jorge Luis Borges.
