GALERIA MAR DULCE
Antes del museo, acuarelas de María Luque
19 marzo al 30 abril 2016
Galeria Mar Dulce, Uriarte 1490,
Palermo Soho

GALERIA MAR DULCE
Before the Museum, paintings by María Luque
19 March to 30 April 2016
Galeria Mar Dulce, Uriarte 1490,
Palermo Soho

“The first series within Before the Museum is documentary and concerns the domestic life of artists. As if captured by a secret camera, they appear absorbed in ordinary moments. Almost all of them are asleep. Fader, for example, notes the movement of a cloud whilst he dreams in his studio. It is likely that many of the artworks reproduced in these scenes exist thanks to the afternoon nap, which must have provided the distance necessary to reduce the gap between intention and result. Here is Manet, in an unknown moment, lost in triviality and floating on an armchair in the middle of the 19th century, far from the watchfulness of the waking hours, on the point of completing Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe. Like the detectors that recently were able to perceive vibrations generated in space by the fusion of two black holes 1300 million ago, María’s drawings locate -from the present- the hidden music of the past centuries’ creative breaths.

The second theme is the interrelationship between the artist and the human resources that intervene like invisible forces to extend the reach of the artwork. Everywhere we find members of the exhibition hanging team in miniature, climbing ladders and drilling holes in walls, as if instead of hanging an artwork they were searching with their hands for the reflection of a distant future light. The members of the logistical adventure are like vital organs and María acknowledges the value of this lateral universe, which also includes the efforts of the restoration and maintenance teams, such as the sistem of scaffolding around David and the watering mechanism that is activated every night within the steel structure of Jeff Koon’s Puppy, a metallic organism that grows in silence through its flowers. The exhibition functions like a giant infographic containing many of the intermediate movements that connect the artist to the museum visitor. It also allows us to imagine the other characters in the chain and their intimate link with art history: the drivers of the vehicles that transport the artworks for exhibition, the deposit workers, the cleaning and security staff, the press and communication office, the guides trained in various languages, the registry and documentation section, the external and occasional employees. Following this logic, it’s possible to believe that the two curators that we see holding hands in secret during the anual programming meeting are now, in another image, eating ice-cream in the underground tunnels that cross the main exhibition room of the museum.” José Sainz, 2016
